When you are using an epoxy glue on concrete, it’s easy to have a little spill. Or maybe you just dropped the mixing tray face down on the floor? These things happen. But don’t worry, there is a solution.
Epoxies are two-part adhesives comprised of a hardener and a resin which, when mixed, form an incredibly strong bond.
It is always best to clean up the mess before it dries and hardens. This is what you need:
- acetone or isopropyl alcohol
- a clean rag and paper towels
- a pair of nytril gloves
When using epoxies you should be wearing gloves anyway, so all you need to do is soak the rag in the acetone or alcohol and rub the area of spillage thoroughly. Allow the liquid to soak in and then clean off with a dry cloth or paper towel. Sand down with wet-and-dry abrasive paper if necessary, to help it blend in with the surrounding area.
The best way to remove epoxy from a concrete floor once it has cured is to use a tool such as a putty knife or a chisel and just scrape away. If necessary, use a hammer to break up the epoxy.
However, to avoid damaging the surface, it is better to use a plastic scraper after first softening the epoxy. To do this, use a combination of acetone and heat. This produces vapors that can irritate your eyes and lungs, so precautions need to be taken. Wear a mask and goggles, and only do this in a well-ventilated area.
After you have removed the hardened epoxy, you can now employ a rag and acetone to mop up any residue. This is especially beneficial for polished concrete floors to return them to their natural shine.
