I’m in love with my car (glue)

While there is a car glue to fix just about anything, it is important to choose the right one because so many different materials are integrated in a modern vehicle. They don’t build cars like they used to, that’s for sure, but the upside is, it’s much easier to fix loose trim or torn upholstery these days.

1. On the outside, mark the position of the rear-view mirror on the windshield using masking tape. This will be removed later.
2. Remove the residual automotive adhesive from the inside windshield using a scraper blade. The mirror is usually attached to a metal plate. Remove any leftover car glue here too, and then separate the plate from the mirror stem. Wipe both the windshield and plate with an alcohol swab to remove the residue.
   
3. Place adhesive tape across the back of the metal plate. This will help keep it in place until the car adhesive fully sets.
   
4. Apply the car glue to the plate by evenly spreading it across the surface. If your glue includes an activator, apply this before the glue. Always follow the manufacturer’s directions. During this stage, make sure that both pieces roughly have the same temperature to avoid any problems later on.
   
5. Fix the plate to the windshield, using the guide on the outside to position it correctly. Check that the plate is the right way up. You want to move the plate as little as possible as excessive movement can damage the plate and or harm the windshield.
6.  Press it firmly into place and hold it for around 30 seconds, then use the tape to keep it there for the next hour or so.
7.  Remove the tape, clean off any car glue overspill and attach the mirror back onto the metal plate.
