Crafts, furniture, drawer linings, and many other applications may require attaching fabric to a wood surface. What is the best adhesive to use?
There are some things to watch out for if you use a liquid or all-purpose glue. A liquid will most likely seep through many fabrics, causing stains or even ruining the project. They also may run or pool in places where the surface is vertical or uneven. Finally, liquid glue can cause some fabrics to wrinkle, shrink, or form bubbles.

In many cases, you will find it easier to cut the piece of fabric a bit larger than needed. Once glued in place, use scissors or a box cutter to remove any excess. This will prevent the possibility of the fabric coming up short on one side.
How to glue fabric to wood using spray adhesive
Here are the steps to follow when using spray adhesive to glue fabric to wood.
- Safety. Work in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves and safety glasses.
- Prepare the wood surface. It should be smooth, dry, and free of dust or lint.
- Shake the can of spray adhesive for about one minute.
- Apply adhesive in a light, even coat to the wood surface. Hold the can vertically if possible and about 8–10 inches away from the wooden object.
- Attach the fabric to the wood surface carefully. Reposition immediately if needed, then smooth out the fabric and press gently but firmly.
- Clear the spray nozzle by turning the can upside down and spraying for 2 seconds. Then wipe the nozzle with a paper towel and mineral spirits.
- Clean up your work area and wash your hands.
- Cut away any excess or fraying fabric edges once the glue is dry (if necessary).
If quick-grab or extra-strength is needed, spray both the wood and the back of the fabric with the adhesive. Allow them to dry for several minutes (until tacky), then attach the fabric to the wood. Using this method will create a stronger bond.
