If your project involves gluing fabric to wood, we have a DIY guide with helpful information on what glue to use for best results.
Gluing fabric to wood doesn’t have to be complicated or difficult. The instructions below will help you choose the best materials and get the job done right.
Crafts, furniture, drawer linings, and many other applications may require attaching fabric to a wood surface. What is the best adhesive to use?
There are some things to watch out for if you use a liquid or all-purpose glue. A liquid will most likely seep through many fabrics, causing stains or even ruining the project. They also may run or pool in places where the surface is vertical or uneven. Finally, liquid glue can cause some fabrics to wrinkle, shrink, or form bubbles.
In many cases, you will find it easier to cut the piece of fabric a bit larger than needed. Once glued in place, use scissors or a box cutter to remove any excess. This will prevent the possibility of the fabric coming up short on one side.
Here are the steps to follow when using spray adhesive to glue fabric to wood.
If quick-grab or extra-strength is needed, spray both the wood and the back of the fabric with the adhesive. Allow them to dry for several minutes (until tacky), then attach the fabric to the wood. Using this method will create a stronger bond.
LePage manufactures top-of-the-line sealants and adhesives, and we recommend the following two spray adhesives for gluing fabric to wood.
LePage Multi-Purpose Spray Adhesive is an excellent choice for attaching fabric to most types of wood. It dries clear, sets quickly, and is acid-free. You’ll love that it works for repositionable applications or permanent bonds.
When extra strength is needed, reach for LePage Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive. This special formulation dries clear, resists yellowing, and creates a powerful bond. It can be used indoors and outdoors and is highly water and heat-resistant.
