Insulate like a pro: How to glue foam board together

Foam board insulation is very popular because its lightweight and has a high R-value. It is easy to cut and install in walls, ceilings, and basements. If you need to glue foam boards together, the best choice is construction adhesive. It is designed to stand up to the weather and bonds well to common building materials. Here are some tips for installing it:

  1. Cut the board to fit. Always test-fit before applying adhesive.
  2. Prepare the cartridge by cutting the dispenser tip at a 45-degree angle. The wider the cut the more glue will flow.
  3. Apply construction adhesive to the back of the board and the edges if appropriate. Run the adhesive in lines about 25cm apart.
  4. Press the board into position and secure it with screws or tape until the glue dries.

Furniture and upholstery: How to glue foam sheets together

Foam sheets are a great way to restore the cushions in furniture, automotive seats, and other applications. Use spray adhesive to glue foam sheets together or to glue the foam to the seat cover. It’s very simple if you follow these steps:

  1. Measure and cut your foam sheet to size. A paper template will help if the shape is intricate.
  2. Spray adhesive on each side of the foam sheets to be joined.
  3. Allow the glue to become tacky before pressing the sheets together.
  4. Allow them to fully dry before use.

If you are reupholstering a chair cushion, here is how to easily create the cover:

  1. Lay the cushion upside down on the new fabric.
  2. Cut the fabric, leaving plenty of extra material on all sides of the cushion.
  3. Test the fit. You will wrap the fabric around the foam cushion like a present.
  4. Apply spray adhesive to the top of the cushion and the bottom of the fabric.
  5. Put the cushion in place and wrap the extra fabric around all sides.
  6. Allow the adhesive to dry. Use tape or weight to keep the fabric from shifting until dry.
