Here are some things to bear in mind before you begin:

  • Some types of glue might bleed through the paper, curl the edges, or otherwise damage the photo. It’s crucial to choose an adhesive that is compatible with photo paper and the other materials you use.
  • For outdoor displays, it is recommended that you include a glass or plexiglass cover over the picture to protect it. Also, consider if it will be subject to sunlight or moisture. Choose a glue that is UV resistant and rated for outdoor use.
  • If the picture is an irreplaceable treasure, create a digital copy so it can be reproduced if the original should be damaged.

How to glue pictures on wood permanently

For permanent application, spray adhesive is a very photo-friendly glue. It has a low moisture content and won’t bleed through the paper or curl the edges of the photo. It is also quick and easy to use since you can apply a nice even coat over the back of the photo in seconds.

Here are the instructions for using spray adhesive to glue pictures to wood:

  1. Set up your work area in a well-ventilated space. Use a drop cloth or plastic to cover any areas that might receive overspray.
  2. Decide where you want to position your photo on the wood. Make a small pencil mark at the corners of the photo if needed, so you can accurately place it once the glue is applied.
  3. Shake the adhesive can 10–12 times and remove the cap. Turn the nozzle to align with the black dot before spraying.
  4. Spray the back of the photo. Apply a light, even coat over the entire surface. Hold the can vertically and about 20–25cm from the photo surface.
  5. Put the picture into place and smooth it out using a soft cloth or dry paint roller. Make sure to remove any air bubbles.
  6. If the photo needs to be repositioned, do so immediately as the glue will set quickly. Lift one corner of the photo and gently peel away, then adjust the position.

For outdoor use, a weather-resistant double-sided tape can be a great solution. It’s easy to use:

  1. Determine where you will place the photo.
  2. Cut an appropriate size piece of tape and apply it to the wood underneath where the picture will be positioned.
  3. Peel away the protective plastic to uncover the adhesive on the top of the tape.
  4. Place your photo in position and press firmly.

Photos can be delicate. Always test a small amount of adhesive on the photo before committing to use it.
