How to glue resin together: A DIYer’s guide

Resin is a highly versatile and durable substance that is widely used in crafts, modeling and 3D printing. If you’re working on a crafts project that involves gluing resin pieces together, it’s important to choose a compatible adhesive. The two most common adhesives for gluing resin are super glue and epoxy. Each have advantages and best uses, so we will cover the details below.

Super glue is a great choice because of its ease of use and fast drying time. It’s ideal for very precise application since only a drop is needed in most cases. Be sure to read the label and choose a super glue that is compatible with the material you are using since there are many different formulas.

1. Prepare the surfaces. Ensure they are clean and dry. Lightly sand very smooth or shiny surfaces with fine-grit sandpaper to improve adhesion.
2. Pre-fit the pieces before gluing. File any rough edges to ensure a tight fit.
3. Apply a small amount of super glue to one surface.
4. Press the parts together and keep them in contact until a bond forms.
5. Allow the item to fully dry.
6. Clean up any drips immediately with a damp cloth.

If using epoxy, follow steps 1–2 above, then proceed as follows:

1. Open the epoxy. Remove the cap, cut the tips of the double syringe, and turn the syringe to point upwards. Expel any air bubbles that rise to the top.
2. Mix the epoxy. Dispense equal parts of the resin and hardener on a piece of cardboard. Mix thoroughly for about 1 minute using a plastic putty knife or similar tool.
3. Clean the syringe tips and replace the caps.
4. Apply the epoxy. Apply a small amount of the epoxy to both surfaces using the putty knife. Press the surfaces together immediately and hold until a bond forms. Use tape or a clamp if needed to hold the parts in place.
5. Remove any excess adhesive. Use a damp cloth to remove wet epoxy. Dried epoxy can be sanded or carefully cut away with a blade.
6. Allow the epoxy to cure. Most epoxy begins to set in a few minutes, full curing takes 24 hours.

Both super glue and epoxy are powerful adhesives. Avoid getting them on your skin. Always work safely by wearing nitrile gloves and safety glasses. Also, choose a well-ventilated workspace with adequate lighting.
